FAQs

What’s the story behind the name?

We know…it’s a mouthful.  Philanthropegie is a combination of Philanthropy and Strategy.  Our focus is on philanthropy – our desire to promote the welfare of others.  Our strategy is to increase the reach and impact of individuals, organizations and nonprofits dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the world.

We’ve worked hard to keep the operating costs low, but we still have bills to pay – and lots of ideas for how to enhance the services we provide and expand the audience we provide them to. Please take a look at the See Where We Are Going Next section for more details.

What is your relationship with the organizations whose resources are listed on the site?

As you might expect, the answer is different for each organization.  We’ve spent quite a bit of time with team members from some of these organizations.  In other cases, we’ve only interacted via email exchange.

We don’t have a financial arrangement with any of the organizations – unless they have chosen to support our efforts through  use of our paid promotional space.  We think it’s important to note that use of paid promotional space do not affect the manner in which an organizations’ resources are listed on our site.

How did you choose the resources that are included on your site?

We spent a lot of time searching through the internet and talking to people involved in philanthropic endeavors.  The primary criteria for being listed on our site is that the organization/site provides resources that are relevant and useful to philanthropic efforts.

As you work your way through the site you will see that resources are provided by both for-profit and non-profit organizations.  Sometimes you’ll see for-profit organizations providing resources at no charge –- and non-profits charging a fee for services they provide.  We were less concerned about the business model than the relevance and value to the individuals, organizations and nonprofits we are here to serve.

How do you choose the “Our Favorites”?

This is, admittedly, a highly subjective process.

There are so many amazing nonprofits around the world and we have allowed space for so few of them here on our site.

It’s important to note that there are a number of great resources available on our site to help you discover and research nonprofits that you can fall in love with.  More than anything, we wanted a way to highlight some of the nonprofits that have touched the hearts of Philanthropegie team members.

How does your rating and review system work?

Only registered users of our site are able to provide their feedback.  We do this in an attempt to enhance the credibility of the ratings.

We realize that this is a very subjective matter.  The same resource could be of great value to one person and of very little value to another.   Even so, we felt that users would appreciate having the benefit of feedback from others who had used the various resources available in a given category.

This is an area we would like to enhance in the future.  You can learn more about our plans for the future in our See Where We’re Going Next section.

What else do you have planned for Philanthropegie?

We have lots of ideas – and we welcome your suggestions.

Check out the See Where We’re Going Next section for more information about plans we’ve already given a lot of thought to.  If you have ideas you would like to share – please send them to [email protected].

Why don’t you charge a fee?

Lot’s of people have asked this question – wondering why we didn’t set this up as an income-generating site?

To us, the most important outcome is for many, many people to find what they need to achieve their philanthropic goals.  If we charged organizations to have their resources listed – we could limit what our users are able to find.  If we charged users, we could limit the number of people taking advantage of what we have to offer.

We do charge a fee for the use of promotional space – as a way to generate income to support ongoing operations and enhancements to our site.  We don’t allow the use of promotional space to influence the manner in which resources are listed on the site.

Sometimes we use promotional space to highlight organizations, resources, stories and events that we believe will inspire or enlighten our users.  No fee is charged in cases like these.
